The problem the U.S. military faced in the 1980s was specific: how do you move a month's worth of clothing in a bag you carry on your back, without destroying the clothes? The solution they arrived at — the ranger roll — wasn't about compression bags or packing cubes. It was about geometry.

How to Do It

• Fold the cuff up and over the roll, encasing it completely
• The result: a tight cylinder that holds its shape in any bag

Where It Works — and Where It Doesn't

The ranger roll excels for t-shirts, casual button-downs, underwear, and jeans. It is not the right method for structured items — blazers, dress shirts with collar stays, or garments with architectural detail you want preserved. Those need to be folded flat against the bag's natural surface, face-in, collar up, never compressed under other items.

The distinction matters. There is no universal packing method because there is no universal garment. This is the same logic that professional garment restorers apply: they read each piece before they touch it. The method follows the material, not the other way around.

The ranger roll is useful to know. But more useful is the underlying principle: how a garment is handled between wearings determines whether it ages well or badly.
